The Congress was held prior to the start of the UFAK Karate Championships in the South African city, headed up by Algerian official Mohamed Tahar Mesbahi, who has led the continental body since 2007.

South Africa Karate Federation (SAKF) President Sonny Pillay managed proceedings, while WKF vice-president Bechir Cherif of Tunisia and Executive Committee member Souleymane Gaye of Senegal were also in attendance.

Spanish official Espinós delivered a video message to the Congress sharing his thoughts on the progress of karate in Africa.

"Africa is the fastest growing continent in karate, as will be demonstrated this week in Durban," he said.

"The discussions at the Congress are setting the base for the continuous progress of our sport in the region, and I want to congratulate UFAK President Mohamed Tahar Mesbahi and WKF Executive Committee members Bechir Cherif and Souleymane Gaye for their contribution to the development of karate as well as to SAKF President Sonny Pillay for hosting this successful event in South Africa."

The Congress agenda included reflections on all six regional Championships in Africa and ways to promote the sport on the continent.

The financial report was approved by delegates, and Mesbahi called for solidarity between the countries present and for efforts to attract sponsors.

The UFAK Karate Championships in Durban are set to conclude tomorrow.
