The Kazakhstan Taekwondo Federation held an open tournament in the southern city of Shymkent.

Adults, cadets, juniors and children aged between eight and 11 all took part in the Shymkent Cup between October 9 and 13.

As well as Kazakh athletes, rivals from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were invited to take part across the five days.

Shymkent, the third most populous city in Kazakhstan, is close to the border with both countries.

Kazakhstan won its sole Olympic medal in taekwondo at Beijing 2008.

Arman Chilmanov captured a share of bronze in the men's over-80 kilograms heavyweight division.

After beating Angel Valodia Matos to win the medal, following the Cuban's failure to return from an injury time-out in time, his opponent famously kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden in the head.

Matos was banned from the sport for life.
