Holders Canada made a winning start at the World Mixed Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland, as they gained victory in their opening group match.

Canada ran out comfortable 10-3 winners against New Zealand in their only fixture of the day in Group A at Curl Aberdeen.

South Korea lead the group after winning both of their matches, with a 12-1 triumph over India, who are making their debut at a World Curling event, followed by an 8-4 win against Slovenia.

Denmark, Finland and Portugal were the day’s other Group A winners.

In Group B five teams sit on one win apiece - Japan, Latvia, Nigeria, Sweden and Norway.

The most dramatic game in the group came at the end of the day with Norway edging past Latvia 8-7 in an extra end.

Hosts Scotland jointly lead Group C after winning both of their matches - 9-3 against Hungary and 8-2 over Slovakia.

Switzerland also won both of their matches in the group today, overcoming Austria 7-2 and Australia 9-2.

Mexico and Austria were the group’s other winners on the opening day of the tournament.

In Group D four teams sit on one win apiece - Spain, Germany, Olympic mixed doubles curling champions Italy and Wales.

Results included Olympic champions Italy edging past the Netherlands 7-6, while Germany were big winners over Croatia 17-1.

Round-robin action is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
