The quartet of Alessandro Miressi, Thomas Ceccon, Lorenzo Zazzeri and Manuel Frigo won by nearly two seconds over Hungary's Nandor Nemeth, Szebasztian Szabo, Daniel Meszaros and Kristof Malik in a time of 3min 10.50sec.

Bronze went to the team of Jacob Whittle, Matthew Richards, Tom Dean and Edward Mildred of Britain in 3:12.70, just off the Hungarians.

Britain's James Wilby won his first individual European title, touching the wall in the men's 200m breaststroke in 2:08.96 for gold.

Matti Mattsson of Finland took silver in 2:09.40, followed by Italian Luca Pizzini in 2:09.97 for bronze.

European record holder Hungarian Kristof Milak was expectedly dominant in the men's 100m butterfly final, touching the wall in 50.33sec, more than half-a-second of the silver medallist Noe Ponti of Switzerland in 50.87.

Further back, Jakub Majerski of Poland claimed the bronze medal in 51.22.

Analia Pigree of France was crowned European champion in the women's 50m backstroke with a time of 27.27.

Silvia Scala of Italy pipped Maaike de Waard of The Netherlands to the silver medal by 0.01sec in a time of 27.53.

Finally, Dutch Marrit Steenbergen, a gold medallist in the 2015 European Games women's 100m freestyle, was victorious in the women's 200m freestyle.

She narrowly defeated Britain's Freya Anderson in a time of 1:56.36 while Isabel Marie Gose from Germany took bronze.
