Para-karate took the stage on the third day of competition at the 2022 European Karate Championships in the Turkish venue of Gaziantep.

This category of the sport is focused on developing the discipline of “kata” for wheelchair athletes, visually impaired athletes, and mentally impaired athletes.

In the division of blind/visually impaired female K10, Benedetta Beloti of Italy qualified for the final with a score of 39.56 while Emiliya Mitlinova of Azerbaijan joined her with a score of 39.76.

The quest for the finalists in blind/visually impaired male K10 ended with Nihat Mammadzada of Azerbaijan and Alexe Dorin of Romania being the last two contestants for gold.

Mammadzada dominated his pool with a score of 38.88 and Dorin topped his pool with 40.56.

In the intellectually impaired category the female K21 title will go to either Lucia Sanchez of Spain or Olivia Kakosy of Hungary.

World Championships bronze medallist Sanchez scored 39.48 and Kakosy, the current world ranking leader, scored 40.22.

Spain will also have representation in the final of the intellectually impaired male K21 category in world champion Carlos Huertas, who confirmed his status as world rankings leader with a score of 40.18.

His rival in the final will be Albert Singer of Germany, the current world bronze medallist, who totalled 38.44.

The third spot for Spain in the finals of Para-karate came in the intellectually impaired male K22 category where Victor Manuel Prieto will dispute the title with Mattia Allesina of Italy.

Prieto, the defending continental champion, scored 38.42 while Allesina, the world silver medallist, totalled 39.62.

World and continental champion Isabel Fernandez of Spain qualified in style for the final of the wheelchair user female K30 class after earning a score of 42.46.

Her rival in the final is local hopeful Murvet Demirtas who dominated the pool with 39.38.

Spain’s successful day continued in the wheelchair user male K30 category as European Championships runner-up Vicente Yanguez earned the right to contest gold with a score of 39.46.

The other spot in the final will be taken by Eldar Ahmadov of Azerbaijan who topped his pool with a score of 40.38.

The Para-karate competition was completed with the category of intellectually impaired female K22. Three athletes qualified for tomorrow’s final - Daniela Topic of Croatia, Alexandra Szabo of Hungary, and Maria Ester De Leon of Spain.

Earlier in the day the finalists were determined for the men’s and women’s team kumite competition.

The title-deciding bout of male team kumite will see Olympic medallists Steven Dacosta of France and Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan go head-to-head. 

World and Olympic champion Dacosta helped France reach the final through a 3-1 win over Belgium in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, five-time world champion Aghayev participated in Azerbaijan’s convincing 3-0 semi-final win over Greece. 

Slovakia and Croatia booked their places in the female team kumite final after overcoming more favoured opposition.

The Slovak team, headed by the finalist in female kumite under-61kg, Ingrida Suchankova, beat Austria in the semi-finals 2-0. 

Croatia had bronze medal contender Lucija Lesjak as their front-runner in a 2-1 semi-final win over Spain.
