South Korea’s Jun Woong-tae set the men’s world record at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup in Albena.

Jun had starred in yesterday’s semi-final by winning 31 and losing four of his bouts in the fencing ranking round.

This matched the world record set by Russia’s Alexander Lesun, before the bonus round was introduced, while it gave Jun a 30-point lead heading into the final.

The outright fencing world record was achieved by earning four points in the bonus round, taking his total to 284 points.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist achieved the fastest swimming time of 2min 1.49sec, before placing seventh in the riding discipline.

Jun sealed victory by completing the laser run in 10:48.20.

The effort gave Jun a world record total of 1,537 points, improving on Lesun’s tally of 1,534 set back in 2014.

Olympic champion Joe Choong finished as the runner-up, with the British athlete ending on a total of 1,501 points.

Egypt’s Mohanad Shaban completed the podium places, finishing one point behind Choong.

Lithuania’s Ieva Serapinaite, who also earned an advantage from her fencing display in the semi-finals, triumphed in the women’s event.

Serapinaite led the standings in the fencing stage of the event, before placing second in the swimming and sixth in riding.

Serapinaite’s laser run time of 12:09.50 saw her finish with a winning points total of 1,402.

The Czech Republic’s Veronika Novotna produced the second fastest time in the laser run, which helped her rise to a second place finish.

Novotna ended the competition on 1,394 points.

Turkey’s Ilke Ozyksel completed the podium places on 1,385.

The World Cup event will conclude tomorrow with the mixed relay.
