The Royal Spanish Taekwondo Federation (RFET) is to host a tournament to raise money for Ukrainian refugees who have had to leave their country after the Russian invasion.

Alicante will host the competition which will be known as the International Open Taekwondo for Peace.

It will take place on April 30 with 100 per cent of all money raised going to Ukrainian refugees.

The event will be held under the "peace is more precious than triumph" motto which has been championed by World Taekwondo and its President Chungwon Choue.

A poster has been created which features two athletes shaking hands while displaying the flags of Ukraine and Russia.

Everyone involved in running the event, such as referees, has agreed to give up their time for free.

Jesús Castellanos Pueblas, the President of the RFET, said the organisation wanted to help refugee children from Ukraine become involved in taekwondo.

Alicante has been designated by the Government of Spain as one of three "reception centres" for refugees from Ukraine.

Around 21,000 people from the country are currently in the province.
