Jeong Ji-Man has been appointed as the new head coach of Rwanda's national taekwondo team.

The South Korean, a former national team athlete, previously coached in Rwanda between 2015 and 2016 as a volunteer.

He will be assisted in his new role by Alain Irene Bagire, who was previously head coach from 2016 until this year.

Jeong has been tasked with preparing Rwanda's team for this year's African Championships.

Rwanda has submitted a bid for the tournament which, according to The New Times, has been successful.

The event is likely to be held in capital city Kigali in July.

Rwanda has never hosted the event before, which was most recently staged in Senegal's capital Dakar last year.

Three Rwandan taekwondo athletes were selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifier but none managed to reach the Games. 

Placide Bagabo is a Rwandan member of the African Taekwondo Union Executive Council.
