In the women’s event Hennessy won with a score of 12.83, with her best wave scores during the final 5.83 and 7.00, as she defeated Malia Manuel of Hawaii, whose total score was 7.46.

Hennessy’s victory was also the first time a surfer from Costa Rica had won a Championship Tour event.

"I have no words, I've dreamed about this moment but I never thought it was possible," said Hennessy.

"To all those people that supported me, I did it."

Earlier in the semi-finals Hennessy scored 15.17 as she defeated Bettylou Sakura Johnson of Hawaii, who could only manage 8.23.

The second semi-final saw Manuel score 12.66 to beat fellow Hawaiian surfer Gabriela Bryan, who finished with a total of 10.23.

In the men’s event, Mamiya competed as an injury replacement for compatriot Carlos Munoz, and claimed his first Championship Tour victory after defeating Kanoa Igarashi of Japan.

Mamiya claimed victory with a score of 17.00, with best wave scores of 8.17 and 8.83 in the final, with Igarashi only managing a total of 12.33.

"I can't believe it, I literally can't believe it. I thought Pipe was the event I was going to do good in," said an emotional Mamiya.

Earlier Mamiya edged past Caio Ibelli of Brazil to reach the final, scoring 3.87 late in the heat to finish with a total of 10.37, enough to defeat his opponent who could only score 9.80.

Igarashi sealed his place in the final after edging past Ethan Ewing in a high-scoring heat, scoring 16.20 compared to the Australian’s 15.83.

Earlier in the quarter-finals Mamiya comfortably beat compatriot Seth Moniz, scoring 13.50 compared to his opponent’s 8.43.

Following their wins Hennessy and Mamiya move top of the women’s and men’s Championship Tour standings, with 14,745 and 13,320 points respectively.

The next round of the Championship Tour season is scheduled to take place in Peniche, Portugal from March 3.
