Three sporty robots known as the "smart triplets" will serve as the mascots of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

Congcong, Lianlian and Chenchen each represent a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the host city.

Robot number one Congcong represents the archaeological ruins of Liangzhu City.

Its name comes from the cong jade pendant - a quintessential relic unearthed from the ruins which dates back 5,000 years.

Congcong is yellow, the colour of a bumper harvest.

The second robot Lianlian represents West Lake and its name signifies a lake full of lotus leaves.

Lianlian is coloured green to stand for both life and nature.

Robot number three is Chenchen, which represents the Grand Canal which runs from Beijing and finishes in Hangzhou.

It takes its name from the Gongchen Bridge - a landmark structure on the Hangzhou section of the Grand Canal.

Chenchen is coloured blue to represent science and technology.

A total of 4,633 submissions for the mascot designs were received by the Hangzhou 2022 Organising Committee, with the final robot characters created by Zhang Wen and Yang Hongyi, lecturers from the China Academy of Art.

"The mascots proudly join the ranks of the emblem and slogan of the Hangzhou Asian Games, completing the full presentation of the unique glamour of the Hangzhou Asian Games," an Olympic Council of Asia spokesman said.

"The mascots will surely be liked by all, especially the youth of Asia."

Speaking during the launch ceremony in April 2020, Raja Randhir Singh, chairman of the Coordination Committee, said the mascots conveyed the smart intelligence of the modern world and the energy of the future.

"The mascots are vibrant and rich in content, integrating Chinese culture, characteristics of the city of Hangzhou and the spirit of the Asian Games and the Asian continent," Singh said.

In April 2021, versions of the mascots practicing the sports on the Asian Games programme were unveiled.

A video called "The Little Cube" won a competition in November 2020, based on the mascots.

In the short film, all three mascots practice some of the sports on the Asian Games programme around Hangzhou.
