El Salvador has been confirmed as the host nation for another major International Surfing Association (ISA) event in the form of this year's World Junior Surfing Championships, with dates of May 27 to June 5 set.

Surf City in El Salvador held the ISA World Surfing Games in 2021, which served as the final qualifier for the sport's debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and it is due to host the same event again in 2023.

The venue, which utilises the El Sunzal and La Bocana waves, is also due to stage its maiden World Surf League Championship Tour event shortly after the conclusion of the Junior Championships, from June 12 to 20.

"We are stoked that our junior surfers will experience first-hand the amazing waves and warm hospitality of Surf City El Salvador," ISA President Fernando Aguerre said.

"Following our great experience there last year with the World Surfing Games, our partnership with El Salvador is strong and delivering dividends.

"Hosting the ISA World Juniors reflects their commitment to support surfing at all levels.

"In doing so, they are helping to nurture the sport’s competitive pipeline from the grassroots up to the Olympics and professional level.

"We are happy to continue partnering with El Salvador to support [the country's] President [Nayib] Bukele’s objective to build a new future for the country and to change people’s lives through surfing.

"This is also our global vision.

"We want to engage young people around the world through surfing - helping them enjoy sport, lead active, healthy lives and be connected to their natural environment.

"And together with our partners, we are working for [a] better world through surfing."

It is set to be the 18th edition of the Junior World Championships, with Huntington Beach in the United States staging it on the last two occasions in 2018 and 2019.

Of the 40 competitors at Tokyo 2020, 33 have previously participated in the ISA's World Junior Championships, with 16 of those medalling at the event.

Surfing is set to join skateboarding and sport climbing on the main Olympic programme from Los Angeles 2028, with all three sports again featuring as additional sports at Paris 2024.

The ISA is also aiming for Para surfing to feature at the Paralympic Games in six years' time.
