Yellow Dragon sports complex ready for Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, Bureau claims

The Yellow Dragon sports complex, which is due to host football, water polo and gymnastics competition at this year's Asian Games in Hangzhou, is ready for action, the local Bureau has claimed.

The complex has undergone a two-year renovation in preparation for the Games.

It features a 52,000-capacity main stadium, which will host some football matches, a 6,000-seater gymnasium, where gymnastic competition will take place, and an aquatics centre which can hold 2,000 people and will host water polo.

Built between 1997 and 2003, with the main stadium opening in 2000, the complex is located 18 kilometres from the Asian Games Village and includes three of the 55 competition venues to be used throughout Hangzhou 2022.

The Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism said on Facebook: "Teamwork makes the dream work — the Hangzhou Asian Games is getting ready to race out of the blocks!

"As a branch venue for the Asian Games, the Yellow Dragon Sports Center Stadium has recently been refurbished.

"The upgraded 'New Yellow Dragon' has finally unveiled its mysteries.

"Hangzhou citizens can now enjoy the exciting competitions at the convenience of their doorsteps."

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine.
