Liv Stone, Sarah Bettencourt and Jose Martinez delivered victories at Pismo Beach to ensure the host nation finished top of the team standings.

Stone triumphed in the women's stand one division, while Bettencourt reigned supreme in the women's prone one category.

Martinez edged out compatriot Jesse Billauer in a dramatic men's prone two final.

"I’m always proud to be a veteran, but this is on the ultimate level," said Martinez. 

"To represent my country for a new sport that’s coming out, that I see as absolutely epic and is going to be so meaningful for the rest of the world, not just for us. I am grateful and I am honoured."

Victoria Feige of Canada and England's Melissa Reid became the first women to win three world titles.

Feige took the women's kneel honours, with Reid securing gold in the visually impaired division.

Mark Stewart of Australia was among the other defending champions to retain their crown as he won the men's kneel final.

"Para surfing belongs in the Paralympic Games," said International Surfing Association President Fernando Aguerre. 

"Getting in is as difficult as getting in the Olympic Games. 

"And I know something about this subject. 

"But two days ago, the Executive Board of the IOC voted to include surfing as a permanent sport in the Olympics. 

"So, getting in the Paralympic Games might be a bit easier now."
