Defending champions the United States enjoyed a successful opening day of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Flag Football Championships in Jerusalem.

The US team triumphed in their opening two matches in the women’s competition in the Israeli capital.

The team opened the tournament with a 46-12 win over a neutral team featuring athletes from Russia, before beating France 39-0.

The results saw the US top the early Group A standings ahead of Spain, who drew 12-12 with France and overcame Finland 57-13.

Panama and Italy lead Group B after securing back-to-back victories.

Panama earned a 34-7 win over the Czech Republic and a 36-7 triumph against Belarus, while Italy were 21-12 winners against Chile and narrow 19-18 victories over Belarus.

Mexico are the only team with a 100 per cent record in Group C, following a 54-24 win over Switzerland and a 33-20 success against Germany.

Austria lie second in the four-team group following a comfortable 46-6 triumph against Switzerland, before a 38-38 draw with Germany.

Brazil are the leaders in Group D, with the South Americans earning a 20-14 win over Japan and a 41-19 victory over Denmark.

The US men's team earned one of the biggest wins on the opening day of competition, with the defending champions easing to a 76-0 victory against Chile.

The result followed a 57-32 win over France earlier in the day, with the victories putting the US at the top of the Group A standings.

Spain also boast a 100 per cent record with a 54-6 win over India followed by a 43-0 triumph against Chile.

Austria and Panama recorded back-to-back wins in Group B to lead the standings.

Panama were 56-6 winners against the neutral team, before overcoming Belarus 63-6.

Austria beat the neutral team 14-0 in their opening match, with their second win a 34-6 success against South Korea.

Group C saw Denmark and Italy clinch consecutive wins to lead the standings, while Israel and Mexico won all three of their matches to top Group D.

Competition is taking place at the Kraft Family Sports Campus, after the IFAF was granted an exemption to the country’s ban on visitors from overseas, which is due to run until December 13.

The top seven teams at the event in both the men’s and women’s competitions, excluding the US, will qualify for the Birmingham 2022 World Games, where the sport is scheduled to make its debut.

The World Games are due to take place in Birmingham in Alabama from July 7 to 17 and are set to mark the first time that flag football will feature at a multi-sport event.
