The United States are set to defend their titles at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Flag Football Championships in Jerusalem, Israel.

The event is able to go ahead as scheduled at the Kraft Family Sports Campus, after the IFAF was granted an exemption to the country’s ban on visitors from overseas, which is due to run until December 13.

The IFAF World Flag Football Championships is one of two events granted an exemption to Israel’s strict border controls, with the other being the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

A total of 39 teams representing 22 nations are due to compete across men’s and women’s competitions, with the US the holders of both events.

Matches on the opening day and the medal rounds are due to be screened on the Olympic Channel.

IFAF managing director Andy Fuller welcomed the news that matches from the championships will be streamed globally, saying: "The IFAF Flag Football World Championships is a signature IFAF event with the popularity of the competition going from strength to strength as 2021 sees a record number of entries.

"The Olympic Channel will bring the event and our world-class athletes to the widest possible audience."

The top seven teams at the event in both the men’s and women’s competitions, excluding the US, will qualify for the Birmingham 2022 World Games, where the sport is scheduled to make its debut.

The World Games are due to take place in Birmingham in Alabama from July 7 to 17 and are set to mark the first time that flag football will feature at a multi-sport event.

Men’s and women’s pool action is scheduled to begin tomorrow in Jerusalem.
