The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Cup of Darts is due to begin tomorrow in the German city of Jena, with Wales' Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton the defending champions.

Current PDC world champion and world number one Price and this year’s Premier League Darts and Masters champion Clayton beat English top seeds Michael Smith and Rob Cross 3-0 in last year’s final which saw Wales win the PDC World Cup for the first time.

They are scheduled to start their campaign this year at the Sparkassen-Arena against Finland’s Marko Kantele and Veijo Viinikka.

England, four-time winners of this event, remain the top seeds but will be represented by a new pairing of James Wade and Dave Chisnall, ranked fourth and seventh in the world, respectively.

They have been drawn against Brazil’s Diogo Portela and Arthur Valle.

Michael van Gerwen had featured in three of The Netherlands' four PDC World Cup triumphs, and the three-time world champion is paired with Dirk van Duijvenbode, a debutant on this stage.

The third seeds are set to face Denmark’s Andreas Toft Jørgensen and Niels Heinsøe in the first round.

Dimitri Van den Bergh and Kim Huybrechts of Belgium are seeded fourth, and have been tied with Greek duo John Michael and Veniamin Symeonidis, late replacements for Croatia after Boris Krčmar withdrew with illness.

Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan are seeded fifth and are due to start their campaign against Hong Kong’s Kai Fan Leung and Man Lok Leung.

The 2019 PDC World Cup winners Scotland will be without world number six Gary Anderson following his withdrawal.

John Henderson will instead partner the world number two Peter Wright, winner of the 2021 World Matchplay and 2020 World Championships, and they are set to start their PDC World Cup bid against Chinese debutants Jianfeng Lu and Wenqing Liu.

Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta of Australia are seeded seventh and face Italians Danilo Vigato and Michele Turetta, and completing the seeds are Germany’s Gabriel Clemens and Max Hopp against Canadians Jeff Smith and Matt Campbell.

A total of 32 countries are taking part in the PDC World Cup of Darts.

The first round ties are due to held tomorrow and Friday (September 10), played as best of nine legs 501 doubles matches, followed by the second round on Saturday (September 11) as two best of seven leg 501 singles matches, with a best of seven leg 501 doubles tiebreaker if necessary.

The second round format will also be in place for the quarter-finals and semi-finals scheduled for Sunday (September 12), which will immediately followed by the final.

The final features two best of seven leg 501 singles matches, then an equivalent doubles match and a reverse singles match, with the winner being the first to three matches.

The winning team will earn £70,000 ($96,000/€81,500) from a total prize fund of £350,000 ($482,000/€407,500).
