Uzbekistan secured two gold medals on the opening day of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo Grand Prix in Warwick.

Uchkun Kuranbaev topped the podium in the men’s under-66 kilograms event at the University of Warwick.

Kuranbaev triumphed in his opening two matches of the competition to set up a final against Spain’s Sergio Ibanez Banon.

The Uzbekistan judoka earned a victory by waza-ari to finish top of the podium.

Venezuela’s Marcos Falcon Tovar and Puerto Rico’s Luis Perez Diaz completed the podium places in the event.

Sevinch Salaeva earned Uzbekistan’s second title in the women’s under-52kg competition, as she earned an ippon triumph against Azerbaijan’s Basti Safarova in the final.

Germany’s Ramona Brussig and Ukraine’s Nataliya Nikolaychyk secured bronze.

Georgia enjoyed success in the men’s under-60kg and under-73kg events.

Zurab Zurabiani achieved a match-winning waza-ari against Venezuela’s Marcos Blanco to win the 60kg title.

Uruguay’s Henry Borges and Spain’s Luis Gavilan Lorenzo rounded off the podium places.

Giorgi Kaldani matched the achievement of his compatriot Zurabiani in the 73kg event.

Kaldani topped the standings after the Georgian judoka won by an ippon score against Uzbekistan’s Feruz Sayidov in the gold-medal bout.

Spain’s Alvaro Gavilan Lorenzo and Ukraine’s Rufat Mahomedov won the bronze medals in the final men’s weight division contested on the opening day.

The women’s under-48kg title was won by Sandrine Martinet of France.

The reigning Paralympic champion achieved a waza-ari score to lead Ukraine’s Yuliia Ivanytska in the final, before sealing victory with an ippon.

Germany’s Carmen Brussig and Uzbekistan’s Lobar Khurramova won bronze.

Brazil’s Lucia Araujo won the women’s under-57kg title, courtesy of an waza-ari win over Argentina’s Laura Gonzalez.

Belarus’ Elena Bogdanova and Kazakhstan’s Dayana Fedossova completed the podium.

Competition will continue tomorrow in Warwick.

The event offers a final chance to secure qualification points for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
