The organisers of the Yekaterinburg 2023 Summer World University Games have announced the Aquatics Palace in the city is set to be completed in March 2023.

Timur Ufimtsev, the general director of the general contractor Sinara-Development told Russia's official state news agency TASS: "The complex is unique, there is definitely [nothing] bigger than it in the Urals and Siberia.

"Before the University Games, test events are to be held here."

The contract for the construction of the complex of the Aquatics Palace was signed in August 2020 between Sinara-Development and Atomstroykompleks Construction.

It is expected to cost almost 10 billion rubles (£97 million/$134 million/€112 million).

This new venue will be erected close to the Athletes' Village, next to the International Exhibition Centre, with the sports facility area expected to take up a space of more than 60,000 square metres.

There will be a rugby field, athletics, track, accommodation for athletes, and a medical centre will appear in the area around the Athletes' Village.

Yekaterinburg was awarded the 2023 Summer World University Games in July 2019 by the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation.

Russia previously held the Summer Universiade in 2013 in Kazan, as well as in Moscow in 1973, when it was part of the Soviet Union.

Krasnoyarsk also hosted the 2019 Winter Universiade in the nation.
