Lesley-Reid 21-11-11November 18 - British Judo's preparations for this weekend's Visually Impaired European Championships took a blow when Lesley Reid (pictured right) was ruled ineligible to compete.

The 2010 World Championship bronze medallist has been assessed as a 'B3' competitor three times previously, the lowest category for those with a registered disability, but a test in Crawley this week ruled that she was not eligible to compete at all.

"We are all very shocked and disappointed at the outcome," British Judo's performance programme manager Dave Sanders said.

"Whilst I agree sight classification needs to be more robust and equal, I am quite surprised to see such significant changes 10 months out from the Paralympic Games – and without prior notification."

Reid joined Team GB in 2010 after impressing during a talent programme for UK Sport, and claimed bronze last year in Turkey at the World Championships in what was her first competitive international event.

It is a blow for both the 50-year-old and the judo squad as she was a good prospect for a medal at the London 2012 Paralympic Games next year.

"I am so sad that I might not be able to see this through to the end, but I do not regret any of it," said Reid.

"I have had the most incredible two years and achieved things that I would never have thought possible."

British Judo want the decision reviewed in the weeks to come, and are hoping that Reid will be able to compete again in the squad.
