Originally scheduled for May 11 and 12, the event was set to follow the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam, also taking place in the city as part of a partnership between the two bodies made in 2018. 

However, the IJF announced yesterday that they had suspended their calendar until the end of June, cancelling both events in the process.

IBSA executive director Henk van Aller said, "It is of course disappointing to have to cancel another major competition under these circumstances, and we thank the Azerbaijan National Paralympic Committee for their work.

"However, we support the IJF in their decision and follow the same principles of protecting the health of judokas and the universal unrestricted participation of all countries.

"We will be back better and stronger than before, once the world has emerged from this unprecedented crisis."

It is not the first IBSA Judo Grand Prix to be cancelled after another event in Nottingham in the United Kingdom set for April 11 and 12, was cancelled in March.

With the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which will now take place in August 2021, IBSA are yet to announce confirmed plans of qualification events ahead of the Games but are set to do so as soon as possible.
