The event would be held in the National Arena Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), that is due to open in 2013 and host the gymnastics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which the city is hosting.

The bid, which has been developed by  British Gymnastics with the support of UK Sport, Event Scotland and the City of Glasgow’s major event teams, was given a boost in Rotterdam yesterday when Beth Tweddle won her third world title with victory on the uneven bars and Louis Smith claimed silver on the pommel horse and Dan Purvis bronze on the floor.

Jane Allen, the chief executive of British Gymnastics said: "This is an outstanding bid with both sport and Government working together to secure this prestigious event for Glasgow. "British Gymnastics is proud to be able to present such a high standard bid to the [world governing body] FIG and is confident that it will be received well by the FIG President Bruno Grandi and the FIG Council who will vote on the 2015 Host City in May 2011."

The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships have been held annually since 1903 - except in Olympic years - and Britain has hosted the event twice before.

First, in Birmingham in 1993 and then again last year in London, when they took place in the O2, which is due to host gymnastics during the London 2012 Olympics.

The Glasgow bid is underpinned by £2 million ($3 million) of public funding and would be held between October 18 and November 2, 2015, in the £50 million ($78 million) SECC arena, holding up to 12,000 spectators.

Esther Nicholls, Events Consultant for UK Sport, said: "UK Sport is committed to staging world class sporting events on home soil, using the catalyst of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 to establish the UK as the leading host of major international sporting events.

"Therefore we are delighted to be backing the bid to host the Gymnastics World Championships in Glasgow in 2015, which will, if successful, provide a fantastic opportunity for British athletes to compete at home during the crucial qualification period for the 2016 Olympic Games [in Rio de Janeiro], but also bring wider benefits to the local economy and for the profile of the sport in the UK."

The bid team have already begun their campaign for support at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships taking place in Rotterdam.

This has included hosting a "Scottish-themed" reception for top officials from each of the competing countries along with members of the International Gymnastics Federation.

The winning country will be announced on 18- 20 May 2011, following an official presentation to the FIG Council.

Paul Bush the chief operating officer for EventScotland said: "We are delighted to be part of the bid team for the World Artistic Gymnastics Competition 2015.

"Staging the event in Glasgow would build on the excitement and spectacle that will be created through the Commonwealth Games and give spectators the chance to witness top level gymnastics competition on their doorstep once again.

"Scotland has proven it is the perfect stage for international sporting events and with the strong Governmental support and funding, this event could be a stand-out attraction in Scotland in 2015."

Next year's Championships are due to be held in Tokyo.
