The race of the night came in the men’s 200 metres individual medley event as two swimmers went under the existing Games record of 2min 06.22sec.

The record was set the last time Samoa hosted the Games in 2007 by Papua New Guinea's Ryan Pini.

Pini was in attendance at the venue tonight in his role as co-commentator for the host broadcaster.

Emmanuel Limozin shattered the current mark as the New Caledonian swimmer shaved off over two seconds to take the gold medal in a time of 2:04.04.

His nearest challenger Brandon Schuster delighted the home crowd by clocking 2:05.54, but his effort proved only enough for the silver medal. 

Fiji’s Taichi Vakasama produced a strong swim to claim the bronze medal in 2:07.84.

The following race also saw a Games record shattered, with Tahiti’s Rahiti De Vos taking nearly 10 seconds off the previous best the 15:50.16 time he set to win gold in Port Moresby four years ago in the men’s 1500m freestyle event.

De Vos was in a race against the clock for most of the event, having pulled comfortably clear of the remaining field.

He touched home in the gruelling event in 15:40.47.

Wesley Roberts backed up securing the Cook Islands’ first Pacific Games swimming gold yesterday as he took the silver medal a long way behind the winner in 16:05.54.

Vakasama won his second bronze of the evening for Fiji by clocking in 16:07.84.

The session had opened with success for the host nation as Lauren Sale earned a narrow victory in the women’s 200m individual medley.

Sale touched the finish in 2:24.12, 0.41 seconds ahead of Fiji’s Matelita Buadromo in the battle for gold.

New Caledonia’s May Toven clocked 2:27.67 for the bronze.

The venue, located metres from the Harvest Centre, which is staging table tennis and taekwondo continued to prove fruitful for New Caledonia’s current crop of swimmers.

Their gold medal tally swelled to 19 in swimming events as Emma Terebo and Florent Janin followed Limozin in securing visits to the top of the medal rostrum.

Terebo’s impressive Games continued when she powered to victory in the women’s 100m freestyle event in a time of 57.60sec.

Samoa’s Lushavel Strickland and Buadromo proved her closest challengers, with the duo rounding off the podium in 57.91 and 58.46 respectively.

The men’s race saw Janin take a commanding win in a time of 50.58, with Tahiti’s Nicolas Vermorel second in 51.36.

Having just finished the men’s 1500m freestyle, Roberts performed strongly in the sprint event to win bronze for the Cook Islands in 51.49.

Another successful night for New Caledonia concluded in typical fashion, with their mixed 4x50m freestyle relay team claiming gold in a Games record.

Having placed third at the halfway mark a strong leg from Terebo put New Caledonia back in contention, with Fiji and Tahiti also vying for the title.

New Caledonia came out on top in 1:39.79, lowering the previous Games record of 1:40.02 in the process.

Fiji were forced to settle for the silver medal in 1:40.89, with Tahiti taking bronze in 1:41.67.
