Home skiers Maiken Caspersen Falla and Johannes Høsflot Klaebo were triumphant in the women's and men's sprint races as the International Ski Federation Cross Country World Cup season reached the Norwegian resort of Drammen today.

For the 28-year-old Falla, the sprint world champion, this was her fifth victory in this particular city sprint.

The 1.2 kilometre sprint course in the classic technique, based around the Bragernes church in the city's centre, also suited Klaebo, Norway's triple Olympic champion, as he secured another win to maintain his overall World Cup lead.

The local crowd provided a great race atmosphere as Falla took the win by 0.8 seconds in front of fellow countrywoman Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen.

Russia's Natalia Nepryaeva was third, 1.06 seconds behind, which saw her come within two points of the overall World Cup lead.

Klaebo kept control during the heats before winning the final with a 0.89sec advantage over team colleague Eirik Brandsdal, with Richard Jouve of France third at 2.17 back.

Only two sprint events will remain this season after the races in the Norwegian resort, which were the last this term using the classic technique.

Klaebo heads the sprint rankings with 604 points from Italy's Federico Pellegrino, who has 459, and also tops the overall Cross Country World Cup list with 1,281 over Russia’s Alexander Boshunov, on 1,250 and fellow Norwegian Sjur Rothe who has 802.

There are 100 points available for a race victory.

Olympic champion Stina Nilsson of Sweden heads the women's sprint listings with 476 from Falla, with fellow Swede Maja Dahlqvist third on 376.

Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Østberg retains the overall World Cup lead on 1,329 points, with Nepryaeva on 1,327 and Finland’s Krista Parmakoski on 1,068.
