The 29th edition of the Winter Universiade is due to take place in the Russian city between March 2 and 12 in 2019.

Over 3,000 athletes from 50 countries are expected to take part in the event.

Athletes will compete in 73 medal events across 11 winter sports.

"I am sure that the Winter Universiade 2019 is an excellent opportunity to tell more about our unique region to the entire world," Urazov said.

"Krasnoyarsk is a city that has over a million inhabitants, the cultural and economic centre of a major region, a comfortable city.

"We want to open up our Siberian traditions and people's friendliness to the world."

Urazov also spoke of the benefits he hopes the Universiade will bring to the city in terms of infrastructure and in the service industry,

"Certainly, Krasnoyarsk will profit from the Winter Universiade 2019 as hosting such event improves the city infrastructure," he said. 

"The event creates new jobs at the venues and other infrastructures.

"We expect the service industry to gain additional momentum as well.

"Krasnoyarsk will soon obtain new chain restaurants and hotels, as well as local establishments with a Siberian flavour.

"Of course, such a large-scale event will make the Krasnoyarsk region more recognisable internationally."
