Despite dominating possession, the South Korean were unable to break through in the opening half of the match.

They were rewarded early in the second when Taewook Jeong gave them a 1-0 lead, only for Argentina’s Federico Chiapello to equalise in the 69th minute.

The forward was substituted two minutes later, with his replacement Juan Ignacio Barbieri eventually scoring the winner in injury time at the end of the match.

Argentina would finish the tie with 10-men when Cristian Mendieta was sent off for a second bookable offence, but the South Americans held on for a 2-1 win.

Ukraine claimed a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the second Group D match of the day.

In Group B, Japan secured a 2-0 win against Malaysia, before Uruguay replicated the scoreline when they saw off the challenge of Canada.

The preliminary stage of the football competition will continue on Sunday, with teams enjoying a rest day tomorrow.

Three matches of the women’s water polo tournament were also held today, with Group B getting underway.

Italy secured a convincing 20-4 win over Argentina, while the United States eased to a 15-4 triumph against France.

Australia were 10-3 winners against Greece in the third match.

Men’s artistic gymnastics competition began today, with the first two of five sub divisions competing in individual qualification and the team final.

The United States posted the best score of the teams today, as they achieved a tally of 242.325 points.

Hungary and Romania complete the current top three on 231.800 and 230.050.

A total of 16 teams will compete tomorrow as the team event concludes.

Ukraine will hope to be in medal contention, with their team including double European all-around champion and Rio 2016 silver medallist Oleg Verniaiev.

Action took place prior to the Opening Ceremony at Taipei Stadium.
