The dates proposed by the event’s Organising Committee have been confirmed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) after close collaboration with all involved International Sports Federations.

"We do hope that the National University Sports Federations and their student-athletes competing in snow and ice sports will book these dates to compete in Lucerne and achieve their best performance during these Games while celebrating great moments together," Milan Augustin, FISU’s director for the Winter Universiade, said.

FISU named Lucerne - which was the only bidder - as hosts for 2021 at an Executive Committee meeting in Brussels in Belgium in March 2016.

Switzerland last hosted the Winter Universiade in Villars in 1962.

The budget for Lucerne 2021 is reportedly CHF33.5 million (£26.9 million/$34.7 million/€30.4 million) with venues including the Swissporarena stadium, which will host the Opening Ceremony.

It is hoped the event will enhance the city’s reputation as a centre for education and culture.

There are currently nine sports on the programme - Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, short track speed skating and snowboarding.

Almaty in Kazakhstan hosted this year’s edition of the biennial Winter Universiade, while Russian city Krasnoyarsk is scheduled to stage the 2019 event.
