A host for the next edition of the Asian Winter Games will be decided at September's Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) General Assembly in Ashgabat, it is hoped.

This comes as a process continues before a planned rubber stamping at the meeting in Turkmenistan.

Either Beijing or Shenyang in China are considered the most likely contenders for an event expected to be held in 2021.

OCA honorary life vice-president Wei Jizhong today claimed today that no host has been decided but they are confident that they will find one.

"We don’t have any preference but following the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Agenda 2020 [reform process], we are trying to invite a bid," he said.

Speaking earlier this week, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah seemed similarly confident.

"We are waiting to receive official confirmation. but we think we are in a stable situation for the next Games," he said.

"We will decide in Ashgabat [on September 20].

"I am confident the next Games will continue on the same timeframe."

In 2015, Sheikh Ahmad said that he hoped either Almaty or Beijing would host the 2021 Games a year before either one of them was due to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Beijing, which ultimately beat the Kazakhstan city by four votes to land the 2022 event, therefore appears the most likely contender.

An event there would present the opportunity for sliding sports to be feature at the Asian Winter Games programme for the first time.

But there are thought to be concerns that venues would not be ready a year beforehand.

Shenyang in Liaoning Province has been muted as another possibility.

No contenders outside China have yet emerged.

China has hosted the continental winter event twice before: in Harbin in 1996 and in Changchun in 2007.
