Hosts Russia dominated the 2016 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships, claiming the four titles on offer across the five days of competition at the Aquatics Palace in Kazan.

Varvara Subbotina claimed the gold medal in the solo routine on the final competition day thanks to a score of 173.9189 points.

Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Yakhno came second with 169.3473 points and Spain’s Irene Toledano finished third with 167.1878.

There was further success for Russia in the duet routine as Veronika Kalinina and Daria Kulagina topped the podium with 170.7455 points.

Other titles won by the home nation were those in the team routine and the free combination with scores of 170.8215 and 91.9333 points respectively.

Japan came second in the team routine with 166.5645 points, followed by Ukraine with 165.6804.

China were Russia’s closest challengers in the free combination, posting 91.2333 points to better bronze medallists Japan’s score by 1.9.

A total of 34 countries were represented at the 15th edition of the FINA World Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships.

Russia also topped the medal standings at the last edition in Helsinki in 2014, when they won three golds and one silver.
