Australia’s Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller has expressed her belief that their new-look team will produce a strong display at Rio 2016, with 80 athletes currently set to make their Olympic debuts.

The team, currently consisting of 126 members, is expected to grow to around 440 athletes when the final selection is completed in mid-July.

Currently 63 per cent of the team will be making their Olympic debuts, compared to 55 per cent of the 410 member delegation at London 2012.

“We are itching to get to Rio and show what our young Team can do,” said Chiller, Australia’s first female Chef de Mission.

“When you meet the first timers, they are excited, they are up for the challenge, they are certainly not daunted by the prospect of competing in Rio.

“It is fantastic to see the Team take shape and the wonderful mix of youth, experience and talent across the board.

“We have worked hard for the past three years building a culture in this team, the athletes are bonding, they are enthusiastic, they are great to be around, and there is a really good feeling in this team.”

To date, 60 athletes in the team are under the age of 25, with shooter Aislin Jones on course to be the country’s youngest competitor at 16.

Her team-mate Warren Potent is currently the oldest member of the team at 54.

Australia have targeted a fifth place finish at the Olympics, having finished in 10th position in the overall medals table at the London 2012 Olympics.

An annual benchmark study by the Australian Olympic Committee, released in December, predicted the country were forecast to improve from seven gold in London in 2012 to 13 gold at Rio 2016

Fans will be able to send messages of support to selected athletes olympics.com.au, while athletes will be posting video messages to mark the 100 days to go until the Games.

An Australian Olympic team online shop is also due to be launched this week as another way for fans to get involved with the team.
