The 27-year-old is accused of sexual assaulting a 22-year-old female victim at her home here in the host city, having visited the residence with another male and one of the victim's friends.

It is alleged Bezerra entered the victim's bedroom, where she is believed to have been asleep, before carrying out the attack.

Toronto Police told a press conference today they believe there could be more victims.

They are urging members of the public to come forward with information.

Both Bezerra and his colleague are believed to have left Canada on the same day the incident is alleged to have taken place.

Canada has no extradition treaty with Brazil, but Toronto Police claimed they were in "discussions with the Crown to discuss the process" with the athlete having left the country.

It followed the conclusion on the Pan American Games men's water polo competition that day before on July 15.

The Brazilian had played no part in the men's final which saw the eventual silver medal winners fall to a 11-9 defeat to the United States.

He is now with the Brazilian water polo team in Kazan to compete in the World Championships, which began today (July 24) and are due to continue until August 9.

Speaking immediately before the name of the athlete emerged, but after Toronto Police had revealed this morning how a case had been opened, the Brazilian Olympic Committee said they were aware of the case but would not comment until they have received more information.
