Vanessa Sahinovic, who was the most seriously injured of the three Austrian synchronised swimmers involved in a bus accident in the Baku 2015 Athletes’ Village, is now in a stable condition in a hospital in Vienna, Austria following surgery.

In a statement the Austrian Olympic Committee (OOC) confirmed 15-year-old Sahinovic had suffered “multiple fractures” with the pelvic region, thigh and spine affected.

Sahinovic remains in an artificial coma ahead of more surgery later in the week, while the statement also revealed it is too early to determine a recovery schedule.

"We are still in shock,” said Karl Stoss, OOC President.

“It is difficult to conceive that the Athletes’ Village at Gehsteig - without any fault of the girl - a tragic accident happened.

Sahinovic had been flown directly to Vienna to receive treatment along with team mate Luna Pajer, who sustained an arm fracture in the accident and currently remains in hospital.

Verena Breit, who was the third athlete injured in the incident, which took place at 8.30am local time yesterday, had been released from the University Hospital of Baku shortly after the incident, having received a thigh contusion.

The athletes had been due to compete in the today’s team synchronised swimming qualifier, but due to the incident, Austria were unable to field a team.

However, sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri were able to compete in the morning’s duets qualification, after advice by both psychologists and doctors and placed fourth behind Russia, Spain and Ukraine, after scoring 83.8333.

"That was, in the circumstances, an incredibly strong performance of the two who wanted to start for their injured team mates,” Stoss said, following the completion of the competition.
