Brazil dominated the Wheelchair Fencing Americas Championships in Montreal, triumphing in six of the seven events.

London 2012 gold medallist Jovane Silva Guissone took top honours in the men’s category B foil and epee events and will undoubtedly head in to this weekend’s International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing World Cup, also in Montreal, full of confidence.

Guissone beat Argentina’s Luis Alarcon to win in the epee event, before adding the foil title with a 15-9 victory against the United States’ Gerard Moreno.

He also played a key role in Brazil’s victory in the team event, as they overcame the US in the final, 45-25.

“This is the fifth year that we’ve come here, and each time we get great results,” Guissone said.

“We came ready to work hard again and get good results this year too.

"We also have some high hopes for the Montreal World Cup this weekend.”

Fabio Luis Damasceno contributed to Brazil’s domination by claiming gold medals in the men’s category A foil and epee events, while compatriot Monica Santos beat Canada’s Ruth Sylvie Morel 15-1 in the final of the women’s category A foil event.

Despite losing out to Santos, Morel gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about by beating the US’s Lauryn Deluca 15-6 to win the women’s category A epee event for the fifth time in a row.

“I trained with commitment and dedication in order to earn my medals,” she said.

“This victory will help me in the world rankings, so it’s very motivating - I couldn’t have done any better.”

The three-day IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup begins today as Great Britain’s Piers Gilliver aims to secure his fourth consecutive title and step up his bid for a Rio 2016 berth.

“Winning this event would bring me a step closer to securing my place at the Paralympics,” he said.

“My training programme has recently changed, which has increased the time and quality of my fencing.

“This and new sparring partners will hopefully keep me ready for the competitions ahead.”
