BREAKING NEWS: Wushu gold medal winner loses appeal against doping failure (see 16:54-17:15)

Goodnight

23:00 And that is that for medals today. Wow. What a mindbogglingly fantastic and highly dramatic evening we've had.

I'm not going to lie to you, it was a struggle, but we've got there, through thick and thing, rain or shine.

The hardest part of the night was quite possibly the birthday celebrations we were left to endure (and envy) as we padded out gold after gold. And, worst of all, no cake. Not a crumb...

I joke of course. It's been a fabulous evening of sporting action with drama, drama, and just a touch more drama at every turn.

From South Korea's last minute winner in the football, South Korea's shock victory in the volleyball to Son Yeon-jae's superb performance in the gymnastics, also for, ermmm.. South Korea...

Yes it's been a good evening indeed for the hosts.

But not just them, China endured a brilliant double sprint gold in the 4x100m relay, as well as record breaking gold in the men's javelin, courtesy of Zhao Qinggang.

India put boxing disappointments aside as their men's team a exhilarating hockey final against Pakistan.

Iran grabbed a slice of the gold medal euphoria in the karate and taekwondo while Qatar recorded an impressive win to seal men's handball gold.

There was all this, and plenty more action in this medal-filled evening of sport here at the Asian Games. And, luckily for you, it'll be here again tomorrow as we prepare for the penultimate day of Incheon 2014.

So, you know the drill, join us again at 09:00 tomorrow morning for another day of excitement here in South Korea...

Good night!

Incheon 2014 gold medal22:40 A final gold medal to bring you tonight, although in truth it happened before the football had finished but we were a little swept up in the madness of it all.... It's the men's 10,000m.

Victory goes to Bahrain's El Hassan El Abbassi as he pips Japan's Suguru Osako in a sprint to the line.

The Moroccan-born runner, who switched allegiances to Bahrain just a few months ago, clocks a time of 28:11.20 after powering past Osako in the final straight.

Osako records a season's best 28:11.94 for silver, while Kenyan-born Isaac Korir, also running for Bahrain, is more than 30 seconds behind in third.

22:32 And that's that for the football. South Korea seal a simply breathtaking win in a historic men's final.

Football tends to feel less popular than other sports when it comes to multi-sport competitions like an Olympic Games.

It's certainly lived up to its billing as the world's most popular sport here in South Korea of all places, however, with this fact highlighted by the medal presenter in the upcoming medal ceremony.

It's only a certain Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, President of the Olympic Council of Asia...

22:30 There's chaos at the football! South Korea have just sent the media room, the Munhak Stadium and the majority of South Korea wild as they score a injury time goal in the final period of extra-time to all but ensure victory in the men's football final!

Changwoo Rim is the man to score as he capitalises on a goalmouth bonanza to send South Korean into a fit of ecstasy. An initial shot is blocked on the line by North Korea, only for the ball to bounce to Rim who smashes it into the roof of the net. A clinical finish and a dramatic ending to this tense and highly-popular fixture.

Incheon 2014 gold medal22:19 Saudi Arabia's Sultan Abdulmajeed E Alhebshi is no stranger to success. The two-time defending shot put champion also holds the Asian and Asian Games record.

He's added a third straight title to his list now, as he notches a season's best 19.99m to take the gold.

It wasn't plain sailing for the Saudi Arabian, however, with Taiwan's Chang Ming Huang back to back bronze medallist pushing him right to the end.

Chang's second attempt of 19.97m led for the majority of the contest, in fact, with a fifth round throw from the defending champion only just knocking him off top spot.

India's Inderjeet Singh rounds off the podium in third with his best throw of 19.63m.

Indian women's set Games record in 4x400m relay

Incheon 2014 gold medal22:10 India have successfully defended their women's 4x400m relay title and, once again, set an Asian Games record in the process.

The nations completed the distance in a Games record time of 3:29.02 in 2010, and have gone one better here tonight.

The team of Pawar Priyanka, Lukka Tintu, Kaur Mandeep and Poovamma Raju Machettira decimate the field to stop the clock at 3:28.68 for their second successive record and second successive title.

Japan come home second with a season's best 3:30.80, more than a second clear of third placed China who also set a season's best . Their time is 3:32.02.

Extra-time in the men's football final

22:05 A brief football update in the North v South clash of the Koreans. The score remains locked at 0-0 as we move into injury time. A lot of oooooos and ahhhhhhhs echoing across the media centre as swarms of journalists huddle arouns the monitors.

Not us though. We're heading off to the athletics...

South Korean golden girl seals the deal in the gymnastics

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:59 Before we wrap up in the athletics its time to head back over to the Namdong Gymnasium where South Korea have gained yet more success.

That's right, local hero and crowd favourite Son Yeon-jae has improved on her world bronze medal from just last week to take gold here on home soil.

The triple Asian champion's score of 71.699 is too good for China's Deng Senyue as she secures the gold by more than a point.

Her victory comes with three wins out of four on the separate apparatus, with just the ball event being won by Deng.

Uzbekistan ensure they taste a slice of the medal pie as Anastasiya Serdyukova recording 68.349 for bronze.

South Korea stun China in women's volleyball

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:50 A big shock in the women's volleyball this evening! South Korea have beat four-time defending champions China in straight sets to take just their second Asian Games volleyball crown, and first in 20 years.

China have been the continent's powerhouse in the sport for the past 35 years, leading the way in much of the rest of the way as well.

They won they Olympic crown in 1984 and 2004, alongside world titles in 1982 and 1986, 12 Asian Championship titles and seven Asian Games titles...

They won't be adding to that in 2014, however, as South Korea secure a 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 victory in 77 minutes.

Japan take their first victory in the men's 4x400m relay for 16 years as South Korea edge Saudi Arabia to silver ©Incheon 2014

21:43 Back to the track where Japan have put an end to the three year domination of the men's 4x400m relay with victory of their own.

The foursome of Yuzo Kanemaru, Kenji Fujimitsu, Shota Ilzuka, Nobuya Kato power to victory in a season's best time of 3:01.88, just 0.18 short of the Games record!

In second is South Korea whose personal best time of 3:04.03 is identical to that of third place Saudi Arabia. The photo finishes judges the hosts to be first across the line, however, as Saudi Arabia record their worst result in 16 years.

The last time that Saudi Arabia did not take gold was in 1998 when Japan set the Asian Games record to take top prize

21:37 Here's a nice little vine of the historic Indian victory in today's hockey final. Now it might just be me, but I think the Indians were rather happy with their shootout victory... It also helps that it sealed them a direct berth into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games...

Zhao smashes Asian record in men's javelin

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:29 The Games and Asian record has been blown, nay, thrown away in the men's javelin where China's Zhao Qinggang has just stunned a rain swept Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.

The East Asian champion notches a massive 89.15m to smash the previous Games record of 83.38m set in 1994 by compatriot Zhang Lianbiao. The distance is also a metre and a half further than the now previous Asian record set by Kazuhiro Mizoguchi of Japan in 1989.

It's another Japanese athlete who racks up the silver medal with Ryohei Arai's throw of 84.42m also further than the old Games record.

In fact all three of the medallists here have broken that mark with Uzbekistan's Ivan Zaytsev taking bronze in a season's best 83.68m.

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:20 Cao Shuo has continued China's recent dominance of the men's triple jump as he seals gold in a season's best 17.30m.

His jump is just one centrimetre shy of the Games record, set all the way back in 1990 by compatriot Zou Sixin, and ensures gold for China for the third successive year.

His team mate, Bin Dong comes in second with a jump of 16.95, while South Korea's 2010 long jump champion, and silver medallist here in Incheon, Deokhyeon Kim, rounds off the podium in third.

Double delight for hosts in soft tennis

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:14 And in the men's doubles, South Korea won another soft tennis title after Kim Dong-hoon and Kim Beom-jun defeated Lin Ting Chun and Li Chia Hung of Taiwan in the final, 5-2 (10-8, 3-5, 2-4, 4-2, 5-3, 6-4, 4-1).

After an epic first set consisting of five deuce points, and then a loss in the second, the host nation finally took control to continue their dominance in the sport. And guess which two countries were represented on the third step of the podium?

That's right, South Korea and Taiwan after pairs from those teams garnered the two bronze medals.

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:13 In soft tennis earlier, Kim Ae-kyung and Joo Og of South Korea defeated compatriots Kim Ji-yeon and Yoon Soo-jung with a 5-1 win (4-2,5-3,8-6,2-4,4-2,4-1) to earn the women's doubles gold medal at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts.

The two bronze medals went to pairs from Japan and Taiwan.

Defending champion Radzivil reigns supreme in the high jump

Incheon 2014 gold medal21:07 An update on the women's high jump final from early for you now where Uzbekistan's defending world champion Svetlana Radzivil has secured gold!

It took until her final attempt on 1.94m to seal the deal as she just edged past China's Zheng Xingjua.

Both competitors had made it to 1.92m with relative ease but the additional two centimetres proved too much for China's double Asian champion. It was looking too high for the Uzbek as well until a brilliant final attempt saw her clear the bar.

As they all do, Radzivil moved the bar up to 2.00m after that in search of the Asian record. It didn't quite come for 2010 champion who had to settle for just the gold medal...

Nadiya Dusanova, also of Uzbekistan, claimed the bronze after clearing 1.89m.

21:04 Following their bizarre gold medal on the track last night, there has been more success for Iraq. The war-torn nation has clinched the bronze medal in men's football by beating Thailand 1-0 at Incheon Football Stadium!

Iraqi coach, Hakeem Shakir Flayyih Al Azzawi said after winning bronze, "Congratulations to the Iraqi people, we targeted gold but we couldn't win it."

The only goal of the game was scored by Iraqi captain Younus Mahmood Khalaf Khalaf 17 minutes into the second half. Khalaf headed in a corner kick from his teammate Ali Adnan Kahim Al Tameemi.

Nick Butler"That is fantastic by Japan, in the rain, to win the rugby sevens title for a third consecutive time. I'm sad I'm stuck in the Media Centre instead of being down there, safe and snug in my insidethegames waterproof jacket, at the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field tonight. But I was there last year during the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing when these continental powerhouses met and enjoyed the cameraderie and rivalry between the two then. And this makes me think even more strongly that if Oceanic nations - such as New Zealand, Australia and Fiji - were here, it would detract from the spectacle of seeing nations like these two, and the likes of China and Kazakhstan in the women's event, getting their chance to shine. Japan of course, are also the hosts of the 2019 Rugby World Cup so will be delighted to have consolidated their regional dominance well before then. All these sides will now be turning their attention towards the sport's Olympic debut at Rio 2016..." - Reporter Nick Butler on the rugby sevens final.

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:59 Japan had a 24-12 victory over Hong Kong to win the men's rugby sevens gold medal at Namdong Asiad Rugby Field. It is by far the biggest rivalry in Asian rugby and the Japanese have won, certainly not easily, but relatively comfortably.

They got off to the worst possible start after Rowan Varty of Hong Kong scored in the opening moments but then hit back with two tries before half time and a further two after the break, with Hong Kong managing just one more.

It's Japan's third consecutive gold medal in the event, after wins over South Korea at Doha 2006 and tonight's opponents Hong Kong four year's ago in Guangzhou.

South Korea defeated Sri Lanka earlier, 17-15, for the bronze medal.

Asian champion edges to victory in final taekwondo match of the night

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:52 It appears the penultimate taekwondo final was just a blip in this evening's theme as the final contest goes down to the wire!

Iran's world and Asian champion Behnam Asbaghikhanghan has to fight from behind to seal the men's under 68kg gold, beating China's defending bronze medallist Huang Jiannan.

Huang took a 1-0 lead in the opening period, extending this to two come the end of the second.

It wasn't until the third that Asbaghikhanghan came alive, however, as he fought ferociously to seal five points in this closing period to seal a 5-4 victory and walk home with the medal.

Interestingly, all four of Huang's points came through penalties with a lack of concentration almost costing the Iranian the win.

India clinch hockey crown in tense shootout

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:49 A phenomenal and tense men's hockey final has seen India secure gold in a penalty shootout!

They and Pakistan could manage just one goal each in normal play, both coming in the first half, sending the match to the dreaded shootout.

Two early missed for defending Pakistan cost them dearly as India rolled on to claim a 4-2 victory in the shootout and record their third Asian Games title in the sport, a first since 1998.

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:45 There have been two agonosingly close taekwondo finals this evening. Defending champion, Asian champion and London 2012 silver medallist Lee Daehoon ensures it's not three as he thrashes Thailand's Akkarin Kitwijarn in the men's under 63kg final.

The South Korea, who also took the world title in 2013 and 2011, secured the win in just two rounds as he recorded 11 points in the opener and seven in the second period to win the final 18-2.

Home favourite on top in the gymnastics

Nick Butler"A big moment for the host nation after the first two rotations of the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around final has finished with South Korea's Son Yeon-jae in the lead with 36.183 points! Son cut the 18-point line in both of her first apparatuses, clubs and ribbon. Deng Senyue of China is following Son in the second place with 35.066, and Kazakhstan's Anastasiya Serdyukova is chasing in third with 34.266 points. Son, remember, only flew in from the World Championships in Turkey, where she won a bronze medal, a couple of days ago, and she was voted the athlete people were most excited to see here in Incheon ahead of the Games. They'll be dancing - maybe not rythmically - in the streets tonight if she holds on here. Still along way to go, however." - Reporter Nick Butler on the big event tonight so far as the locals are concerned.

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:33 It is gold for China in the women's rugby sevens final! They beat Japan 14-12 at the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field but, wow, what a final.

The teams traded converted tries in the first half with Zhou Lilian and Sun Shichao scoring for China and Lilian Yamahuchi crossing the line for Japan. But then Chihau Nakamura scored early in the second for the Japanese, only to miss the conversion for the extra two points herself!

That left her team two points behind, and in the tightest of conclusions China hung on for gold.

But it was such a tougher match then the preliminary game between these two teams, which ended in a comfortable 28-7 win for the Chinese, so Japan should be proud. Kazakhstan remember, took the women's bronze after edging Hong Kong a little earlier.

The men's final is up soon.

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:25 Winner of the men's all event and men's team event, Park Jongwoo of South Korea is at it again as he tops the billing in the masters final.

He records a score of 407 to beat Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong by six pinfalls in the final showdown.

Wu had beaten United Arab Emirates' Shaker Al-Hassan in the earlier stepladder round one to book his spot in the final, leaving Al-Hassan to settle for bronze.

China complete sprint relay double with Games and Asian record

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:19 China have done the 4x100m relay double! I'll tell you what, if the women were quick, the men's were like bullets...

The quartet of Chen Shiwei, Xie Zhenye, Su Bingtian and Zhang Peimeng break both the Games and Asian record as they fly to victory in 37.99.

Their time is 0.04 quicker than the previous Asian record set by Japan who, incidentally, finished second her tonight. They finish exactly half a second behind the winners of 38.49, while Hong Kong set a season's bets to take third.

CAS confirms Malaysian wushu player has lost her appeal against doping failure

20:15 Confirmation now about the news we brought you earlier (scroll down to 16:53 and 17:15) about Malaysian wushu athlete Tai Cheau Xuen having lost her appeal against a doping failure, after her appeal to the ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport was thrown out.

Here is the statement in full...

Quote marks"The ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
present in Incheon for the Asian Games ruled today on the application filed by the Malaysian athlete Tai Cheau Xuen against the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to disqualify her from the 17th Asian Games and to withdraw her medal. Tai Cheau Xuen won a gold medal in the sport of wushu on 20 September 2014, but subsequently tested positive for the banned stimulant sibutramine (A and B samples).
The athlete decided to challenge the OCA decision as she noted some departures from the International standard for testing procedure. She filed an application at the ad hoc Division of CAS on October 1, 2014. A hearing was held this morning before a CAS Panel composed of Justice Catherine Davani (Papua New Guinea), President, Prof Dong Su Ahn (Korea) and Ms Thi My Dung Nguyen (Vietnam) in the presence of the Chef de Mission of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, representing the athlete, and of the OCA representatives.
The Panel rendered its decision at 3:30pm today, dismissing the application of the athlete and
confirming the OCA decision to disqualify her from the Games. As a consequence, the medals in the women's wushu nanquan and nandao competition will be re-allocated by OCA.
The full award with grounds will be published on October 3 2014."

It will be interesting to hear the reaction to this decision in Malaysia... But we can now confirm that Indonesia's Juwita Niza Wasni, the runner-up behind Tai, will be promoted to gold.

Third-placed Wei Hong of China will take silver with Ivana Ardelian Irmanto, also of Indonesia, upgraded from fourth to the bronze medal position. We will be bringing a full report of these developments later.

20:09 Defending champions Kazakhstan were forced to settle for the bronze medal in women's rugby sevens earlier after a 12-0 victory over Hong Kong. Next up it is the gold medal match, between China and Japan.

China have already beaten their East Asian rivals once during the competition. Can they do it again?

Incheon 2014 gold medal20:03 Sweet revenge for China in the taekwondo as Guo Yunfei gets the better of South Korea's Lee Wonjin in the women's under 67kg final

Now if you though the opening final was close, then this is hard to even comprehend.

Just three points were scored in the match, two of which came in the final period.

Guo opening the scoring with a single point in the second, before being penalised in the third to level the scoring. Lee was then penalised soon after, handing the victory to Guo in the tensest of tense finals.

Iran seal double delight in karate

19:58 So, two titles apiece for Iran and Japan on the first of three days of karate action here, with the other one going to Malaysia. Nice to see a couple of medals for Macau as well...

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:55 A second gold for Iran in karate! Hamideh Abbasali defeats Zeng Cuilan of China 3-1 to win the women's kumite over 68kg division at the Gyeyang Gymnasium.

That is the last gold medal of the evening in the sport.

The two bronze medals this time around went to Ayumi Uekusa of Japan and Paula Pereira Carion of Macau.

Games record for China in 4x100 women's relay

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:49 Back to the gold medal action and there's been a record breaking performance at the athletics...

China's women have stormed to victory in the women's 4x100m relay final in a Games record time of 42.83, beating their previous record of 43.36 set in Bangkok in 1998.

Kazakhstan come home in second, more than a second behind, inches ahead of Japan in third.

19:44 Phew. We've got gold medals coming out of our ears here. To break things up a bit, here's what Sri Lanka captain, Hettige Thirimanna had to say after the coin toss win over Bangladesh early today...

Quote marks"Hopefully, we'll continue our luck tomorrow. We chose to field, because the weather report said that there will be rain in the evening and we were chasing victory. And luckily, we got a chance to flip the coin and enter the final. We are not as experienced as Afghanistan, but we have energetic young players, so we'll do our best. Since we have a good bowling side, we'll improve the batting side. We want to target the right-handed batters in Afghanistan. And we'll continue this format tomorrow."

Karate gold for Iran

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:40 In the second of three kumite karate finals this evening, Sasis Hassanipour Sefatazgomi of Iran defeated Lee Ka-wei of Hong Kong 2-0 to claim the gold medal in the men's under 75kg division at the Gyeyang Gymnasium.

The two bronze medals in this competition went to Songvut Muntaen of Thailand and Gofurjon Zokhidov of Uzbekistan.

Gold galore for South Korea

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:35 Another South Korean gold now, as Dabin Lee continues the hosts brilliant form in the taekwondo. They may have missed out on gold on the opening day but four golds in five is something quite remarkable.

This next one comes in the women's under 62kg category as Lee just, and I mean just, beats China's Zhang Hua by eight points to seven.

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:30 South Korea power to victory in the basketball after a brilliant final quarter against three-time defending champions China.

The scores were pretty even at 54-52 going into the last but the hosts found another gear to record their first women's basketball gold medal for 20 years.

Fifth Asian Games gold for Jamal

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:25 Maryam Yusuf Isa Jamal has won her fifth Asian Games gold medal as she pips team mate Mimi Belete to the line in the women's 5,000m.

Her time 14:59.69 is a pretty good one as she beats Belete to a sprint to the line. Belete clocks 15:00.87 for silver while Ding Changqin rocks home 12 seconds later in a personal best 15:12.51.

Qatar storm to handball title

Incheon 2014 gold medal19:20 Qatar have sealed the gold in the men's handball final as they pull through to beat South Korea 24-21.

That's two medals on the bounce for Qatar after victory in the Asian Handball Championship in Bahrain

19:18 There's a lot happening right across the board at the minute so we will try to keep you up to date as quickly as possible. Be prepared for a gold medal haul...

19:16 As the athletes fight for position in the 5,000m, it's time for a quick look in on the women's basketball final.

South Korea currently lead this one 54-52 in an immensely tight encounter with China.

China have, of course, won this title on the precious three occasions so there is certainly no ruling them out as we move into the fourth quarter.

South Korea have won the title three times in total - 1978, 1990 and 1994- and have lost in the final in two of the last three tournaments.

Athletes ready themselves for women's 5,000m

19:10 Favourites in the 5,000m will no doubt be Bahrain's two Ethiopian-born runners Mimi Belete and Maryam Yusuf Isa Jamal.

Belete is the defending champion over the distance having picked up gold in Guangzhou, alongside bronze in the 1500m. The 26-year-old moved to Belgium as a political refugee as a teenager before switching to Bahrain in early 2009.

Jamal moved to Bahrain in 2005 after a stint in Switzerland, she is a three-time gold medallist at the Asian Games having won gold in the 1500m in Guangzhou and 1500m and 800m titles in 2006.

The pair placed first and second in the 1500m here with Jamal taking victory for the third successive year.

19:08 Also underway on the field is the men's triple jump and men's javelin event. We'll get to them in a minute as first up we have the women's 5,000m.

18:59 There's a busy schedule at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium this evening with 11 gold medals up for grabs.

First on the agenda is the women's high jump where all three medallists from the Guangxhou Asian Games are present.

Uzbekistan's Svetlana Radzivil took gold four years ago with an Games record height of 1.95m and could be considered favourite again this evening.

Her team mate and reigning silver medallist, Nadiya Dusanova will also be a top contender, as well as China's reigning bronze medallist Zheng Xingjuan.

18:51 Talking of bronze medals, Kazakhstan have just wrapped one up of their own following a strong performance in the women's rugby.

The defending gold medallists would have been slightly disappointed not to make it into the gold medal final, being contested by China and Japan later this evening, but wil take the bronze nonetheless, I am sure.

Just two tried were scored in this semi-final, both for Kazakhstan, as they ran out 12-0 winners.

18:42 South Korea have edged their way to bronze in the men's hockey competition following a 3-2 win over Malaysia in the playoff fixture.

The hosts netted twice in the second period to gain the momentum moving into the second half. That didn't prove the case, however as Malaysia pulled one back just four minutes into the third quarter to pile the pressure on the Koreans.

Korea added a third nine minutes later though, giving a seemingly comfortable cushion as the third period ticked by. Malaysia's reply came just a minute later to keep the hosts on their toes, however, on their toes did they keep, as they fended for their life for the duration of the fourth quarter to secure the bronze medal.

Japan seal karate gold

Incheon 2014 gold medal18:36 There's been a gold medal at the Gyeyang Gymnasium where Japan's Hiroto Shinohara has defeated Kazakhstan's defending champion Rinat Sagandykov in the men's under 67kg lkarate category.

The Japanese athlete had previously picked up gold in the team kumite event at the 2012 Asian Championships and has been in brilliant form at these Games.

18:27 We've got an extremely tight men's gold medal handball final on our hands at the Seonhak Handball Gymnasium where Qatar are taking on South Korea. The score sits at 12-11 in favour of Qatari's who are on a roll following gold at the most recent Asian Handball Championship in Bahrain.

18:11 I need to take a moment to beg the forgiveness of my colleague Nick Butler and all his supporters out there. During the canoe/kayak obstacle slalom finals early, Nick gave me his insightful views and opinions on proceedings at the Hanam Misari Canoe/Kayak Center and I ever so rudely, forgot to add them to the blog. Soo, a little later than planned, here's what our very own Butler had to say on the sport

Nick Butler"A great moment a little while ago as we watched the K1 obstacle canoe slalom bronze medal race between Aki Yazawa of Japan and Shaghayedh Seyedyoosefi of Iran. In pouring rain, the Japanese kayaker well and truly capsizesd, stayed underwater for a good couple of seconds, before reappearing after a beutifully constructed eskimo roll and paddling furiously to the line narrowly ahead of her rival. Watching that reminded me of a horrible school trip to Wales aged 11 when we were taught how to perform an eskimo roll in a lake which seemed to also be the local sewage depository. I failed, I seem to recall... Anyway, this obstacle slalom event is an interesting one. Held on a flatwater lake rather than a whitewater one, the main difference from canoe sprint is the twisty-turny and therefore more technical course. But with two kayakers going head to head at the same time but in alternate directions - so rather like the cycling team pursuit - it's certainly a good one to watch, and the more eskimo rolls the better."

Iraq have taken a 1-0 lead in their bronze medal football final with Thailand ©AFP/Getty Images

18:00 Iraq have taken a one goal lead against Thailand in the men's bronze medal football match.

A second half strike by captain Younus Mahmood Khalaf Khalaf is the difference at the minute as Thailand push for the equaliser.

Iraq took gold in this sport in 1982 and silver 24 years later at Doha 2006. Thailand have never medalled in the event despite making three bronze medal matches. They felt hard done by after a controversial penalty decision in their semi-final with South Korea. A feeling held by many here in Incheon it seems..

Incheon 2014 gold medal17:50 Another gold to tell you of now as China continue their dominance in the diving.

Si Yajie is the latest winner following a score of 394.25 in the women's 10m platform final. The 15-year-old world champion (yes 15!) tops team mate Huang Xiaohui by 31.95 points to win her first Asian Games title. (Well she was only 11 when the last Games were on..)

Kim Unhyang of North Korea just four points behind Huang as she claims the bronze.

Incheon 2014 gold medal17:41 One sport certainly not affected by the weather is that of bowling. The women's masters final has now drawn to an end where South Korea's Lee Nayoung has won gold.

The double world champion beat Taiwan's Wang Ya Ting by 477-437 to secure here six medal of these Games, and fourth gold.

Lee's team mate Son Yunhee takes bronze after she lost to Wang in the steplalder round one match.

17:34 The rain is causing all sorts of problems here today. The cricket semi-final between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had been called as a win to Sri Lanka on the system here but with no explanation as to why.

A bit of traditional digging around has discovered that a coin toss was used to decide the finalist due to rain disruptions in Bangladesh's innings. The side were 59 for three after 11 overs when rain delayed proceedings. After a long wait, officials decided that a coin toss was the only way to resolve the fixture, with a tails call from Sir Lankan captain Hettige Don Rumesh L Thirimamna giving them progression to the final.

They will now meet Afghanistan in the battle for gold after they defeated Hong Kong in the earlier semi.

Japan take gold in softball

Incheon 2014 gold medal17:24 Japan have wrapped up gold in the rain-delayed softball grand final with a 6-0 win over Taiwan.

We're just querying whether the final three innings were played over at the Songdo LNG Baseball Stadium following some slight confusion with the information system here, however, the score and result have been confirmed with Japan picking up their fourth consecutive gold medal in the sport.

Wushu gold medallist loses appeal

17:15 Back to the news of Malaysia's wushu champion Tai Cheau Xuen losing her appeal against a doping failure.

Tai tested positive for the stimulant sibutramine after winning the gold medal in the nanquan and nandao all-round event on September 20, the first day of competition, and has subsequently been stripped of the title.

The Malaysian team have strongly protest this decision on the grounds there were irregularities in the processing of her sample, and have allegedly refused to hand the medal back.

But, according to AFP, OCA officials have revealed that the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport here in Incheon has dismissed the appeal.

Tai is the most high profile of the five athletes to have failed doping tests so far.

The others being Tajikistan soccer player Khurshed Beknazarov, Cambodian soft tennis player Yi Sophany, Syrian karate competitor Nour Aldin Al-Kurdi and Iraqi weightlifter Mohammed Jasim Abbood Al Aifuri.

Incheon 2014 gold medal17:08 Despite losing out to China for individual gold, South Korea have taken the top prize in the team event on the back of the second and third place finishes by Soojin Yang and Minji Choi.

Scores of 1260 and 1250 for Mina Jeong and Sunwoo Kim helped cement the gold.

Japan came in second courtesy of impressive scores by Rena Shimazu,  Narumi Kurosa and Shino Yamanka, with 1276, 1275 1267 respectively, while China claimed the bronze.

Incheon 2014 gold medal17:06 In the women's individual event, China's Chen Qian has secured the gold medal with an overall score of 1348. The world number one was 13 second behind South Korea's Minji Choi come the start of the combined running/shooting but fought back tremendously to seal the gold.

She ended up 36 seconds clear of second placed- Soojin Yang, also of South Korea, with Choi claiming bronze in third.

17:01 While my colleague gets to the bottom of that breaking doping story, I can bring you an update from the modern pentathlon...

BREAKING NEWS: Wushu gold medal winner loses appeal against doping failure

16:54 Some breaking news to report now. We are hearing that Malaysia's wushu champion Tai Cheau Xuen has lost her appeal against a doping failure that saw her stripped of her Asian Games gold medal.

Quote marks"It was good race and it was nice experience but this river's condition is little bit different from my country, it is raining but I put all my efforts  on the competition today." - A quick reflection by Kazuya Adachi on that final gold medal in the canoe/kayak obstacle slalom event.

Incheon 2014 gold medal16:41 Four finals and zero gold medals for Taiwan as Kazuya Adachi strikes gold for Japan in the men's kayak single final.

The 2013 Asian team champion, and bronze medallist in the single event, was too quick for the man from Taiwan as he recorded a time of 1:04.96 to seal the gold.

Incheon 2014 gold medal16:35 Straight back to the Hanam Misari Canoe/Kayak Center where China have claimed a second gold medal!

This one comes courtesy of 2008 Asian champion Li Tong as she records a time of 1:09.42 to beat double silver medallist Chang Chu Han in the women's kayak single final.

16:27 As the canoes switch to the kayak's there is enough time for us to dart back to the softball where we have a delay in play.

The rain has been a cruel mistress at different times across these Games, and has struck again here today. As well as cricket delays, we've now got similar in the softball where China lead 6-0 at the top of the seventh innings.

After no runs were made in the fourth and fifth, Japan came out swinging in the sixth, adding two more runs to extend their leading margin to six. We don't expect the rain to delay proceedings for long, but maybe a much needed time out for the trailing Taiwan.

Incheon 2014 gold medal16:20 A second gold goes amiss for Taiwan as Japan's reigning silver medallist Takuya Haneda defeats Chang Yun Chuan in the men's canoe single.

This one is much closer as the Japanese paddler finishes in 1:13.08, just over a second quikcer than Chang.

Incheon 2014 gold medal16:16 They may be in all four finals but that doesn't guarantee gold. China's Cen Nanqin provs that in the opener as she storms to victory in the women's canoe single final.

The two-time Asian champion, and double world silver medallists flies to victory in 1:23.79, almost 11 seconds clear of Taiwan's Chen Wei Han.

16:10 Before the gold medallists are determined there's time, just, to head to Songdo Global University Gymnasium where the finallists for the men's team kabaddi event have been decided.

India beat South Korea 36-25 to book their spot in the final, where they will meet Iran following their 25-14 victory against Pakistan.

India have won every gold medal since the sports introduction into the Games in 1990 and will be favourites to win again here. They actually beat Iran in the last final in Guangzhou, which was just the second tournament to feature a playoff round.

Finalists ready in the canoe/slalom obstacle slalom event

16:05 We're all set up for the canoe/kayak obstacle slalom finals now as the bronze medal playoffs draw to a close.

Taiwan's Chen Wei Han and China's Cen Nanqin will open proceedings as they battle for gold in the women's canoe single final.

A Taiwanese athlete will gun for gold in the en's equivalent as well, as Chang Yun Chuan goes head to head with Takuya Haneda of Japan.

In fact, all four of this afternoon's final will include a competitor from Taiwan with Chang Chu Han taking on China's Li Tong in the women's kayak single, and Pan Hung Ming up against Japan's Kazuya Adachi in the men's kayak single.

15:59 Japan have extended their lead to four now in the softball after claiming three from the third innings. There are no scores in the fourth and fifth innings and players are just out ready for the sixth. It's looking like a fourth straight title for the Japanese here...

15:50 It's taken a penalty shootout to determine the fifth place finisher in the men's hockey!

Japan and China were going head to head in this 5-6 classification fixture but with the scores level at one apiece come the final whistle, a penalty shootout was needed to decide the winner.

China were the side to take it as they edged their opponents 4-3, in an unexpectedly cagey affair.

The bronze medal match is schedules for 16:30 before the "big" one at 19:00. Here we'll see hockey powerhouses Pakistan and India battle for gold. Pakistan lead the overall title count at the Asian Games having picked up eight golds in total, including the 2010 Games, while India have claimed the title just twice, having been in the final a whopping 11 times...

15:41 After spending an age looking into the format of the masters bowling event, I believe I finally have it covered.

Following the second block of the women's competition this morning, the top three have progressed to the stepladder final. It was the term "stepladder final" that really threw me, however, it simply seems to mean knockout phase, if my research is correct.

As the overall winner of the masters final, having topped the scoring in block one and two, South Korea's Lee Nayoung progresses straight through to the stepladder final round two.

The second and third place finishers, South Korea's Son Yunhee and Taiwan's Wang Ya Ting, will now go head to head in the stepladder round one, hoping to book their place in the next round, which is essentially the final.

Relatively simple really. I just wished they'd called it semi-final and final...

15:30 Bangladesh have hit 59 in the first 11 overs of their men's cricket semi-final with Sri Lanka. In what is considered the "winners" semi-final, in that the winner of the event is likely to come from it, the Bangladesh side have lost three wickets en route to their current tally.

It's a mile shy of the run count they had accumulated yesterday in their quarter-final encounter with Kuwait, which they won by 225 runs to 21, and will probably need to improve if they are going to book a spot in the final.

Play has actually been postponed now due to the rain, so it's really not looking good for the Bangladesh team.

Md Anamul Haque Bijoy was actually out for a golden duck after being dismissed by bowler Danushka Dilhara Lokuhettige in the opening over. It went from bad to worse for the Bangladeshi's as they went six for three, before Tamim Iqbal Khan and Md Shabbir Rahaman Roman began to notch the runs.

As ever, we'll keep you updated with that.

Incheon 2014 gold medal15:14 A gold medal to tell you about in the diving now... (full marks if you guess who won it)

Yuan Cao is the victor and, you guessed it.. He's from China.

The London 2012 Olympic champion tops the leaderboard in the men's 3m springboard to seal his second gold of these Games, following a win in the 3m synchronised springboard competition.

The 19-year-old beats team mate He Chao by 19.85 points as he records a score of 523.65 for first place.

Japan's Sho Sakai wins the battle for third to take bronze.

Yuan won gold at the 2010 Asian Games at the tender age of 15! He has been a major figure on the world stage ever since, picking up countless medals in the World Series, World Cup and Grand Prix events, usually in the synchronised event.

15:01 Over to the softball Grand Final now. (obviously a normal final isn't quite enough there, so why not add a grand final to proceedings).

Japan have taken a 2-0 lead over Taiwan as the third innings tick by. A dead heat in the opener was followed by the single run for Japan in the second.

They have extended that lead to two in the third and are still on bat... Maybe more to come?

Japan are actually the reining Olympic champions, and have been for six years, after the sport was dropped from the sports programme following the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. They have also picked up the last three Asian Games title and are heavily favoured to repeat that feat today.

14:54 A quick women's modern pentathlon update for you now as athletes get set for the final event - combined shooting/running.

South Korea's Minji Choi leads after the opening three events. The 21-year-old recorded an event-high score of 300 points in the horse riding after finishing the course in 1:03.63 with no penalties.

She leads team mate Soojin Yan, bronze medallist at the 2010 Asian Games, by six points after Yan finished in second in the horse riding.

The Chinese duo of Chen Qian and Yufei Bian sit in third and fourth with 832 and 808 points respectively. World number one Chen finished top in the fencing with a score 270 but slipped down to ninth in the horse riding to leave her in pursuit of the leaders.

South Korea lead the overall team event with Choi and Yan leading the charge there. Japan are in a distant second with fifth-placed Narui Kurosu holding the mantle for the nation. China follow in third, around 100 points behind the Japanese.

Indian struggling due to a lack of strength of depth?

14:47 India have won a total of exactly 50 medals so far, but only seven have been gold, along with nine silver and 34 bronze. They are down in 11th position on the medals table. What do you think? Tweet us your thoughts.

14:40 As the criticism of Indian administration continues over the boxing controversy earlier, some interesting comments from the Sports Authority of India director general Jiji Thomson. He admitted that India has not progressed as an Olympic nation even after its best ever haul of six medals at the London Games in 2012 and the main reason is lack of strength in depth.

"I don't think we have made a lot of progress since 2012 London Games. I believe, we have a lot to worry about the bench strength in a lot of sports. Look at badminton. After Saina [Nehwal] and [PV] Sindhu, we don't have another player of that calibre whom we can look up to," Thomson said.

"Look, you have to understand that we lost out on a number of medals. Had [tennis player] Somdev Devvarman been there, it was a case of sure-shot gold medal. [Wrestler] Sushil Kumar was another gold medal contender. Had BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) agreed to send even their 'B' team, there were two gold medals there for the taking. Our athlete Dutee Chand was a contender to win a gold medal in 100m sprint. So in a way, we lost out on at least five to six gold medals," Thomson said.

14:32 So the afternoon of sport is beginning to really heat up now around Incheon as we pause to have a bite to eat, a rather bland but still quite pleasant cake-like bread product we have just been handed.

Boxing semi-finals, taekwondo knock-out matches and table tennis singles and doubles clashes have been taking place...along with the playoffs in rugby sevens ahead of the semi-finals later on.

Taiwan flag14:20 A big result over at the Songdo LNG Baseball Stadium a little earlier as Taiwan edge China 4-3 in the softball final playoff. So the Taiwanese have progressed to a Grand Final against Japan, that has just begun.

Ex-South Korean table tennis star arrested for drink driving

14:12 An interesting story developing about Hyun Jeong-hwa, the former table tennis player from South Korea who was meant to serve as head of the Athletes' Village at the Incheon Asian Para Games later this month. She has resigned from that post after causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence.

Hyun Jeong-hwa, 44, is one of the host country's best-known retired athletes, winning the gold medal in the women's doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She attended the Opening Ceremony of Incheon 2014 as a member of a Flagbearing squad composed of retired athletes.

The incident took place in the early hours of yesterday morning, when Hyun hit a taxi at an intersection in Seongnam, a satellite city of Seoul, the Bundang Police Station said. One male passenger in the taxi was injured and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police said. Hyun had a blood alcohol level of 0.201 percent, well over the legal limit, police said.

According to police investigators, Hyun, who currently works as the coach of the Korea Racing Authority's table tennis team, said she didn't remember with whom or where she had been drinking. "We allowed her to return home because she was very drunk. We'll set the schedule for questioning her later," a police officer in charge of the case said.

Hours after her release, Hyun offered to resign as the chief of the Athletes' Village for the upcoming Incheon Asian Para Games, and the Organising Committee accepted her resignation immediately. "I had wanted to fulfill my duty at the Asian Para Games. I am sorry for causing trouble," she was quoted by one committee official as saying.

It is yet to be decided who will replace the disgraced coach, the organisers have said, adding they will name a replacement "as soon as possible."

Nepalese success on day 13

14:05 Speaking of Nepal, there was an update in the press briefing this morning about the three athletes, in the sports of sepak takraw and wushu, to have gone missing during the Games. (Read more here.) Incheon 2014 said that police are "currently investigating to find their whereabouts but haven't yet found them". If the trio do not turn up by October 19, the date their Asian Games visas expire, they will be classed as illegal immigrants.
