The 63-year-old from Taiwan declared his intention to run in a letter to AIBA's membership of almost 200 national federations.

Wu took office in 2006 by defeating longtime incumbent Anwar Chowdhry from Pakistan, who was later barred for alleged financial corruption.

Rival candidates can be nominated up to 30 days before the AIBA Congress opens November 1 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where the poll will be held.

Candidates must have served a full four-year term on the ruling Executive and be supported by their national federation and at least 20 other AIBA members.

"I am proud of what I have achieved as AIBA President," wrote Wu, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee.

"I have indeed given my best efforts to elevate the sport of boxing to one of the top sports in both international sport and within the Olympic Movement."

Citing the World Series of Boxing and the AIBA Academy as examples of the revolutionary work that has been accomplished within AIBA over the past four years, Wu's letter continued: "I truly believe that I have done enough ground work to pave all foundations for AIBA and the sport of boxing during the last four years to leap for another level.

"Therefore, I have decided to run again for the AIBA Presidency as I believe I could well serve another four years to draw together with you more great successes in all areas."
