Aisling Miller shooterJune 12 - Student Sport Ireland (SSI) have announced their squad for the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, including shooters and rowers for the first time, along with men's and women's football teams and swimming, athletics and gymnastics representatives.

Aisling Miller (pictured top left) from University College Dublin (UCD) is the sole shooter on the Irish team roster and will compete in the women's 10 metre air rifle, as fellow UCD student Amy Bulman is set to compete in rowing, along with Monika Duskarska from the Institute of Technology, Tralee.

Many footballers from the Irish top division are amongst the men's football team that are travelling to Kazan, including UCD teammates, striker Cillian Morrison and defender Tristan Dent and former Mervue United and Plymouth Argyle trainee Tom King.

The women's team is also full of UCD players, including Ciara Grant, who has represented Ireland at all underage levels, along with Chelsea and Irish international defender Sophie Perry from the University of Brighton and her fellow internationally capped goalkeeper Eve Badana from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

In the pool, National 1500m freestyle record holder Andrew Meegan from the University of Limerick is set to compete in his favoured event as well as the 400m, with Limerick team-mate Christopher Bryan due to compete in the 10 kilometres open water event and multiple national record holder Fiona Doyle from the University of Calgary down to compete in five events, including her favoured 100m and 200m breaststroke.

University of Michigan gymnast Rohan Sebastian completes the squad, bar the athletics representatives, which are due to be announce on Sunday (June 16).

John Treacy, chief executive of the Irish Sports Council, said: "The Irish Sport Council is delighted to be in a position to support this Irish team and knows that the team can rely on the best available support personnel.

"We know the life-changing power of sport and fully support the Games ideals of fair play, solidarity and friendship.

"I have no doubt that the Irish team will strongly uphold these ideals as it endeavours to bring honour and glory to themselves and our country".

Team Ireland Chef De Mission Cathy Gallagher, who also led the team to the last Universiade in Shenzhen two years ago, said: "Team Ireland will compete in six of the 27 sports in Kazan and comprises the creme-de-la-creme of our student athletes at third level.

"We welcome on board again athletics, gymnastics and swimming; the return of men's and women's football and the inclusion of rowing and shooting to the delegation for the first time.

"Other than participating at the ultimate sporting occasion that is the Olympic Games, students will not have a similar opportunity to experience the cultural, interpersonal, camaraderie and lifetime synergies which are an integral part of the Games.

"We will respect and uphold the reputation of Ireland as a valued member of the FISU family and enshrine the achievements and memories of Kazan 2013 for the student sport benefit".
