The United Arab Emirates city, which hosts the annual Fazza International Powerlifting Championships and previously held the IPC Powerlifting World Championships in 1998, is expected to welcome up to 300 athletes from 50 countries for the tournament – scheduled for April 5 until 11 next year.

The event, which is one of the major competitions for athletes on the road to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, will be hosted by the Dubai Club for the Disabled, with UAE Disabled Sports vice-chairman Thani Juma Berregad acting as chair of the Dubai 2014 Organising Committee.

The IPC Powerlifting Sports Forum will also be held in conjunction with the Championships.


"As this is such a critical competition on the Paralympic pathway, the 2014 IPC Powerlifting World Championships will be a terrific competition for athletes trying to make their way to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, as well as for up-and-coming competitors from a range of countries," IPC Powerlifting Sport Technical Committee chairman Jon Amos said.

"The event will be the largest gathering of powerlifters since London 2012, and it will take place in a location that has previously hosted several successful IPC Powerlifting and other Parasport competitions."

The last edition of the IPC Powerlifting World Championships took place in Kuala Lumpur in 2010, where of the 292 athletes from 49 countries Iran's Siamand Rahman, Egyptian Sherif Othman and Souhad Ghazouani of France - all gold medallists at the London 2012 Paralympics - starred, all breaking world records on their way to the top of the podium.
