The centre, to be based on the Nambu University campus in Gwangju, will be based over four floors and will have a seated capacity of over 3,500 when completed.

The centre is one of just three venues that will be purpose built for Gwangju 2015, along with archery facilities and a gymnasium, as part of Gwangju's key aim to lower costs and minimise construction by redeveloping existing facilities where possible. 

The facilities will also be open to students and citizens, and will be constructed in a way that is "in the best interest of local residents' welfare and health", according to officials.

The venue is currently in the running to host the 2019 FINA World Aquatics Championships, hoping to follow in the footsteps of this year's Summer Universiade hosts Kazan, who will host the 2015 edition of the World Championships at their newly-built aquatics centre.

They face competition from Guangzhou or Hangzhou in China, 2020 Olympic and Paralympic bid city Tokyo and 2019 Summer Universiade bid city Budapest to host the 2019 World Aquatics Championships.
